Jim Libby is a drug-addled Rugby player who moonlights as a pet doctor. He’s a psychotic murderer, a trailer-trash physicist, a guitar playing devil in tight jeans, a detective’s quirky assistant, or an infamous party-girl you wouldn’t take home to mom. All together, he’s the sum of his parts: one of the most versatile and talented actors working today. In the tradition of actors like Philip Seymour Hoffman or Sam Rockwell, Libby is of that rare shape shifter breed—the consummate actor who is capable of fully adapting to and inhabiting the role of the moment. This lends him a degree of anonymity and makes it easy to forget where you’ve seen him before, his face lurking at the edge of recognition. After a theatrical debut as a squire in Camelot at the age of 10 and an inauspicious start as the neo-Nazi in the prize-winning ‘dream film’, Sieben Richtungen, Libby has built an eclectic career based on solid choices and artistic integrity. His status as an everyman makes it possible for him to play just about any character, giving him a range and flexibility that is almost unheard of within the modern stage and film system. Critically acclaimed turns in Winners & Losers, Fully Committed, The Judenstadt, Wiederspentigenzähmung, and with the English Lovers and das urtheAter, have served to confirm his status as a dedicated performer. He was captain of the Austrian National Team for improvisational theatre at the World Cup 2006 (2nd place), moderator for innumerable events, and is a favorite among ad companies as a voice-over artist par excellence. With the highly anticipated development of Fini&Joe, an improvised sitcom for TV, Libby may be on the way to mainstream recognition. Don’t panic, though.
