International Theatre

A Brief History of the Theater The International Theater is an English language theater owned and operated by an American, right near the heart of old Vienna. Cleveland\'s Marilyn Close and Denver\'s William Wallace, both experienced singers, were drawn to the culturally rich old city on the Danube by its traditions and continuing name as the music capital of Europe. After working with various companies (both opera and theater), they decided to open their own theater. The first performance (Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward) premiered in Graz in November 1974. For the next few years the Wallaces lived a mostly vagabond existence, touring shows like Becket\'s Happy Days around the provinces. After brief stints with various spaces in Vienna, the International Theater found its permanent home on January 14, 1980 at Porzellangasse 8 in Vienna\'s ninth district. The first production was The Effect Of Gamma Rays On Man-In-The-Moon Marigolds by Paul Zindel. Since then over 150 plays have been produced, ranging from drama (The Glass Menagerie, Who\'s Afraid of Virginia Wolf, Long Day\'s Journey into Night, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Look Back in Anger, Our Town, Animal Farm, A Taste of Honey, Slow Dance on the Killing Ground, A Moon for the Misbegotten, A Touch of the Poet, Of Mice and Men, Fool for Love, The Little Foxes, The Gin Game, Skin of Our Teeth, The Removalists, The Collector, The Miracle Worker, On Golden Pond, The Woolgatherer, A Life in the Theater, The Dresser, Eden End, The Elephant Man, Children of a Lesser God, Painting Churches, The Trip to Bountiful, Driving Miss Daisy, Death and the Maiden, Betrayal, Angels in America, Copenhagen, Art, Agnes of God) to comedy (The Importance of Being Ernest, Charlie\'s Aunt, Private Lives, Harvey, Arms and the Man, Pygmalion, Arsenic and Old Lace, The Odd Couple, Beyond Therapy, Butterflies are Free, The Good Doctor, Black Comedy, The Matchmaker, What the Butler Saw, Greater Tuna, Crimes of the Heart, Shirley Valentine, The Foreigner, Baby with the Bathwater, Candida, Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll, Fallen Angels, Moon Over Buffalo, Barefoot in the Park, Lend Me a Tenor, Play it Again Sam) to thrillers (The Mousetrap, An Inspector Calls, Dial \'M\' for Murder, Deathtrap, Wait Until Dark, Misery, Gaslight, Ten Little Indians, Veronica\'s Room, Rebecca, The Hound of the Baskervilles, Dracula) to Shakespeare (Hamlet, Twelfth Night) to musicals (The Beggar\'s Opera, Quilters, Into the Woods, You\'re a Good Man Charlie Brown). The annual production of A Christmas Carol has become an institution in Vienna. When the Wallaces celebrated the fifteenth anniversary of the International Theater in 1990, it became evident that they had no intentions of resting on their laurels. Just a few steps away they found a cellar in the Serviten-Church and converted the basement into a theater they christened \'The Fundus\'. The opening took place on May 22, 1990 with Night Mother by Marsha Norman. Co-founder William Wallace passed away in the summer of 2000, and Marilyn has continued on with the tradition of producing quality English language theater in Vienna- in an intimate setting with a family atmosphere.
